Two of the most promising
iPad rivals have recently been released to the market. However, it would be really an exaggeration to say that they were a market hit. Samsung started selling its 7- inch Galaxy tab while Toshiba presented its 10 inch Folio 100. Most people doubted from the very beginning whether it would be possible for a tablet of such a small size, more typical of a regular smartphone than a tablet to attract lots of customers. So, Galaxy Tab was treated more like a mini-tablet – a sub category between a smartphone and a real tablet device. On the contrary, Toshiba’s Folio, having a larger screen and a dual core processor, running on the base of Froyo 2.2. had all the grounds to become a crowd’s favorite and the iPad’s most likely competitor.
However
despite all luring promises and strong arguments Steve Jobs warned the public in one of his interviews that Galaxy would be dead on arrival while the other gadget would leave much to be desired. Most consumers as well as market analysts took his words more like a deep inner desire and a determination to keep the money bgringing market for his own company and its products. Some time passed and it turned out that he was right.
One of the UK major retailers of consumer electronics announced several days ago that it was going to withdraw all Folio 100 Tabs from its stores. The reason was quite serious and really sad – a high rate of returns. So, the company decided not to irritate consumers. Moreover, as the company’s representatives stated they could get disappointed with a really good device which needed just several adjustments and changes.
Nevertheless
most people do not believe in any minor adjustments and think that only a complete overhaul can save the gadget. Actual complains are not that numerous and include no flash and zoom touch support while some users complain of lack of apps available for the gadget. What’s funny, all the consumers were aware of that from the very beginning as Toshiba announced that it would launch its own online app repository.
The decision
was caused by the fact that Google representatives admitted that Froyo is not suitable for tablets only when Folio 100 was in production. So, Toshiba has to think of some other decision concerning apps available for the gadget. It was planning its own online store with its own apps developed specifically for its devices.
Given the company
ideas to deliver several more gadgets to the market of different form factors, an online repository may turn out to be a good solution. However, so far the company does not have any ideas as what to do with returns and it seems that, on the whole, the breathtaking release of the gadget is stumbling which is really disappointing
